My review:
Genre: Romance – Sports and various others (check the individual reviews for details)
Stand-Alone: Yes!  All books are stand-alone novels
Part of a Series: Some yes, some no.  Check the individual reviews for details
POV: All dual
Steam-Level: Varied from warm to melting kindle
Overall rating: 4/5

As an anthology Hot on Ice this was a great mix of romance genres and steam-levels.  It has something for everyone!.  Overall, the stories were well-written and fun to read.  My only complaint was that Edwin’s role and personlity differed and in some stories which broke the continuity between the stories – although I loved his character in Xio Axelrod’s The Warm Up!  See below for reviews for each story.

Book 1: Deep Check by Kimberly Kincaid
Hotshot hockey center Finn Donnelly wants nothing more than to take The Cup to his best friend’s grave after the Rage’s big win. The problem is, that also means going back to his hometown and seeing January Sinclair, a.k.a., the woman he left behind. Will Finn and January learn to build new trust–or will their ghosts keep them from falling in deep?

Genre: Romance – Sports (Hockey, duh), Second-Chance, Friends-t0-Lovers
Stand Alone: Yes
Part of a series: Book 1.5 of the Station Seventeen Series
POV: Dual Finn and January
Steam Level: Toasty
4.5/5

Super cute second chance romance set against a small town and making amends for past wrongs.  This story features both hockey players and fire fighters – what’s not to love!  This was definitely a feel-good novella.  I like both the second-chance and friends-to-lovers themes and this had both.  Throw in smart and sexy characters and we have a hit!  Deep Check shows us the power of friends, family fighting for what you want and forgiving others of their past transgressions.  I definitely wan to read more of this series.

Book 2: Bear Naked by Katie Kenyhercz
First Nations defenceman Bear Thompson wants to spend his day with the Cup back home on the reserve, but first he has to convince his childhood sweetheart and current band chief Aria Paul to give him another chance and that letting the media in won’t be the end of the world. The last thing Aria wants to do is fall back in love with the man who broke her heart and left her in the dust, but old feelings spark new ones, and when Bear sets his sights on a goal, it’s only a matter of time.

Genre: Romance – Sports, second chance, friends-to-lovers
Stand-Alone Yes
Part of a Series: I don’t think so
POV: Dual Bear and Aria
Steam Level: Warm
4/5

Super cute and sweet romance about finding home and opening your heart to love even after hurt.  I like that not only does this focus on the main characters but also the indigenous community that they are a part of.  This book portrayed the community as close knit but not without their issues and how the media may portray them.  It’s about opening yourself up and letting others in, accepting consequences and others.  These underlying themes are what made this novella.  It was very well-written and heart-warming.

Book 3: BODY CHECK, USA Today Bestseller Desiree Holt – Matt Vorchak always dreamed of playing professional hockey and winning The Cup. Then he would marry the woman of his heart and live happily ever after. But Lizzie Andrews wanted him to stay in Tampa with her and build a life there. Their split was agonizing for both. Ten years later he has realized one dream. Now he wants to recapture the other, and he’s using his day with the Stanley Cup to win her back. But he has a secret that may change everything for both of them.

Genre: Romance – Sport, second-chance
Stand-Alone: Yes
Part of a Series: No
POV: Dual Matt and Liz
Steam Level: Quite toasty at times
4.5/5

I have to admit, when I started Body Check I thought “Another Second-Chance Romance, it’s getting a little old.” The first three book/novellas are all second-chance romance and while I like, them I need a little variety.  However, I’m glad I continued reading this one.  Matt has to work hard if he wants to get Liz back and it was fun to see what he and some relationship fairies help him come up with and execute.  While mostly set in the present the flashbacks help to add dimension to the his schemes.  This was a feel good book about learning to forgive, recognizing and owning your mistakes, moving on after you think you’ve lost everything, and how sometimes you have to lose in order to win.

Book 4: BREAKAWAY BROOKE, Publisher’s Weekly Bestseller Angi Morgan – When hockey phenom Deacon Sanders mistakes Brooke Henderson for a puck bunny, he’s set on scoring the ultimate goal with the fiercely sexy bodyguard. Keeping watch from a distance is impossible when everywhere she turns Deacon’s there like a loose puck in front of the net. Despite his annoyance that his family thinks he can’t keep himself out of trouble, can he convince this Amazon beauty to stop fighting her erotic powers long enough to play his game?

Genre: Romance – Sports, Suspense, Paranormal
Stand-alone: Yes
Part of Series: Yes – Book 3 of the Bodyguards in Heels Series (which isn’t even out yet!)
POV: Deacon “Tripp” and Brooke with one more thrown in a few times to ratchet up the tension
Steam Level: Rather warm but not too hot
4.5/5

I really liked this story and would have given it 5 out of 5 except for some continuity issues that bugged me a little (enough so that it was distracting but not enough to not read the book).  This story is unique in it’s mixture of sport, suspense and paranormal.  Brooke is a bodyguard secretly hired by Tripp’s parents/brother due to threats made to Tripp.  She’s also a real fan and can make people fall in love with her.  The combination of all of these elements combine to make a fun story that keeps you on the edge of your seat to see whodunit.  I look forward to reading more of this series and already preordered book # 1.

Book 5: UNDER THE MIDNIGHT SUN, Kim Golden – Jonas Magnussen’s icy blue stare has earned him the nickname the Iceman. On and off the ice, he’s cool, collected and hard to handle. When an injury threatens to end his career, Jonas is faced with a choice he thought he’d never have to make. Mariam Kidane is the only woman who ever made Jonas lose his cool. A chance encounter with her melts Jonas’s icy facade and leaves him wondering if life away from the league is such a bad thing, especially when it means a second chance at scoring the ultimate goal: love.

Genre: Romance – Second-Chance, Interracial, Refugees, International
Stand-Alone: Yes
Part of a Series: No
POV: Dual Jonas and Mariam
Steam level: Warm
3/5

I’m tempted to say just skip this one for a variety of reasons.  The editing was terrible with a bunch of missed words and quite a bit on continuity issues.  On one page Jonas was his sister’s big brother and then her little brother (and he only has one sister), Edwin became Edwards for a few pages and then returned to being Edwin, and Mariam sat in the window seat in the airport baggage claim.  With this many mistakes it reads like a rushed first draft that was put aside and returned to months later while on a deadline with no time to read over or have someone else read over.

However, there are some aspects of this book that I liked.  For example, it deals with racism toward interracial couples in both Sweden and the US.  I like that Sweden is presented as any other country with their own issues and not held up on the pedestal like people tend to do.  I enjoyed the exploration of being a refugee and the expectations that are put upon refugees.  It was great that Mariam is from Eritrea, a little talked about country with major issues and that she speaks Tigrinya (one of the language spoken in Eritrea).  Using Eritrea as where the main character is from shows that the author is (or can be) knowledgeable and creative.  I’d be interested in maybe reading more of Golden’s work I’d just need a sample first before I’d be willing to pay for her books.

Book 6: IN SKATES TROUBLE, Kate Meader – Right winger Ford “Killer” Callaghan can’t believe he let the anonymous woman who blew his mind slip away into the night. He’ll track her down because once could never be enough–even if discovering Addison Williams’s identity places her strictly out of bounds. Stolen kisses. Secret hook-ups. Deliciously forbidden in every way. Can a passion that started in the dark find a lifetime of love in the light?

Genre: Romance – Sports, forbidden
Stand-Alone: Yes
Part of a Series: Yes – Prequel (book 0.5) to the Chicago Rebels series:
POV: Dual Ford and Addy
Steam-level: My kindle may have melted a little bit
5/5

It’s been awhile since I’ve read an author and have immediately wanted to read the rest of the books that she has written. This novella has inspired me to definitely look up Kate Meader (and I’ve already signed up for her newsletter). The writing, story and tension were impeccable. This book was so hot and also had a ton of plot. It was full of emotion, learning to forgive and to move forward, to depend on others around you and to trust your heart. Excellent story and I look forward to reading more of Meader’s works.  So far, this has been the best book in this anthology!

Book 7: CHECKING YES, Misty D. Waters – Family secrets drove star left-winger Cooper Banks away from the love of his life, but hot off a championship win he’s no longer satisfied with second place. Except the daddy’s girl he left behind is now a woman no longer impressed by his charming smile. So when Savannah Jane Scott decides to put Cooper in the penalty box, she aims to keep him there…for good this time.

Genre: Romance – Sports, Second-Chance, Small Town
Stand Alone: Yes
Part of a Series: Yes – Book 1 of the Charming Dove Harbor Series
POV: Alternating Savannah and Cooper
Steam Level: Warm
5/5

When I started it I was a bit annoyed to be reading another second-chance romance.  However I really enjoyed this book.  It was a quick, super cute read.  I enjoyed some of the Southern wit and charm with the sweet as pie digs.  The secret was interesting to read and discover.  The emotions and hostilities seem realistic and not over the top.  I definitely enjoyed this book and look forward to reading more of this author and series.

Book 8: PENALTY BOX BLUES, Robin Kaye – Stryker Gyllenhaal, enforcer on the Ragin’ Cajun’s, knows that once he hits Boise, his time spent in the penalty box is nothing compared to the payback Karma Kincaid has in store for him. When he finds out she has hired a handler, Trish Reynolds, his old college tutor, he’s not sure who the real enforcer is. Karma, because she owns him for an entire week, or Trish, the only woman who knows his secret, and can slam his heart against the boards with a sideways glance. He is so pucked.

Genre: Romance – Small town
Stand Alone: Yes
Part of a Series: Seems to be part of the Domestic Gods Gone Wild Series
POV: Mostly Stryker and Trish
Steam Level: Toasty
5/5

I liked this one quite a bit as well.  It was a fun combination of friends-to-lovers and small town with a healthy dose of positive thinking, law of attraction, and different types of intelligence.  Trish is brilliant but not so smart with issues of the heart.  Stryker has a well-hidden learning disability and left-over thoughts of being dumb.  Both work well together and I love how this story deals with the stigma attached to learning disabilities and how to overcome them.  Sweet, heart-warming and sexy I enjoyed this story and definitely will check out more of Robin Kaye’s books.

Book 9: FREE AGENT, USA Today Best Seller Robin Covington – Defenseman James “DC” Washington has had a big year: winning “The Cup” and coming out to his team and the entire world were events that changed his life. Now a free agent, he thought he had his next step all planned out . . . until the man he might not be able to resist puts a sexy offer on the table.

Genre: Romance – Sports, M/M, LGBTQ
Stand-Alone: Yes
Part of a Series: I don’t think so
POV: James/Etienne
Steam Level: Quite warm
5/5

I have to confess that this is the first M/M book I’ve read and it was awesome!  Robin Covington does an excellent job of conveying the emotions DC and Etienne feel for each other.  I loved the honest portrayal of the stigma attached to homosexuality in professional sports, the work to overcome the haters, the need for support and acceptance and the acceptance of yourself.  Fantastic book.

Book 10: BLADE, Avery Flynn – Bad girl Gillie Pike has gone straight, but someone with a lot of money wants to bring her out of retirement to steal the Cup and make sure it’s found in star goalie Flynn Kazakov’s possession. They call him Crazy-kov for a reason and nothing makes him more nuts than his best friend’s sexy little sister who swears she’s the only one who can keep him out of jail and on the ice.

Genre: Romance – Sports, Second-chance, suspense, best friend’s sisters
Stand-Alone: Yes
Part of a Series: Yes – Book 2.5 of the B Squad
POV: Mostly Flynn and Gillie
Steam-level: A little bit melty
4.5/5

This was quite a fun book.  It was quick paced and kept me guessing.  I love romantic suspense books and I was glad that there were so many twists and turns throughout.  Although my first book by Avery Flynn, definitely not my last.  Avery Flynn shows that she’s earned her reputation as a great writer with this story.

Book 11: MAKING HIS MOVE, Susan Scott Shelley – Backup goaltender Rod Fraser is a free agent in every sense. He’s ready for a new team, and hoping for another shot with his best friend’s sister. But Arielle Charton thinks Rod’s interest is fleeting, and she doesn’t need the distraction. She’s on a mission to rebuild her life. Rod’s made his living making impossible saves, but it will take the impossible to convince the shy artist that she’s captured his heart.

Genre: Romance – Sports, Best Friend’s Sister and Sister’s Best Friend
Stand-Alone: Yes
Part of a Series: It looks like it will be part of a new Buffalo Bedlam Series
POV: Rod and Arielle
Steam level: Warm
4/5

This is a really sweet story about coming home and taking chances.  Arielle’s been hurt in the past and is timid.  Rod has had a thing for Arielle for years but has a short-attention span.  The sparks fly with these two both going out of their comfort-zones.  I liked Rod.  He was sweet and caring but didn’t want to settle for being second in his career or love.  I enjoyed the portrayal of a supportive family, even if it was a little sappy.  The emotion was just the right amount of sweet and spicy.

Book 12: CHECK MY HEART, Christi Barth – Kurt Lundquist can’t resist the beautiful & compassionate nurse who eased his brother’s last days, despite knowing she doesn’t want any reminders of her ‘death duty’. Lisette does want the hot but oh-so-sad hockey star. Can she lift him out of his grief – and will she want to once she learns his terrible secret?

Genre: Romance – Sports, Sweet
Stand-alone: Yes
Part of a Series: I don’t think so
POV: Kurt and Lisette
Steam Level: Warm
4/5

Christi Barth is the only author that I’ve previously read in this anthology.  While, the other books I’ve read of hers have been hot and sexy, this one was slow burn leading up to the sexy (it was quite hot) that was only a small portion of the book.  I thoroughly enjoyed this story.  Christi Barth deals with love and loss and moving on in a powerful and realistic way.  I found myself rooting for Kurt and Lisette and giggling a Jasper cock-blocking from the grave.  Reading this I’m reminded again about how great a writer Barth is and I cannot wait to read more from her.  If you haven’t read Christi Barth, I highly recommend you doing so.  The men that Christi writes about are sweet, caring, and a bit protective, which is a very hot combination and the women who love them are smart, feisty, and can hold their own in a battle of wit and wills.  Check My Heart is no exception.  Well done!

Book 13: BLOCKED, Heather Long – Archer Durham’s career has been defined by his badass attitude both on and off the ice, unfortunately it’s biting him in the ass. After one too many unfortunate videos of him turned up on social media, both his fans and the press have turned against him. The win shines spotlight on the whole team and he needs to clean up his act…but what the hell does he know about being a knight in shining armor?

Genre: Romance – Sports, Royalty, Bad Boy
Stand-Alone: Yes
Part of a Series: A novella in her Going Royal Series
POV: Archer and Hoshi
Steam level: Warm
5/5

Wow! What an awesome and fun book.  I love the media stories thrown in throughout the book.  It made added a unique flavor to the story.  Archer’s tips to Hoshi on dealing with the press were both fun and spot-on.  My favorite was the difference between neutral and Resting Bitch Face (I still don’t have that one figured out.)  I also enjoyed the family dynamics in both of their families, which are mostly just alluded to.  I’ll definitely be reading more of Heather Long’s works!

Book 14: FULL CONTACT, Andie J. Christopher -Leftwinger Anders Sorenson has never met the perfect woman before breaking up a fight at Dahlia Clarno’s bar. Dahlia’s  hot, she doesn’t care about his fame, and she has no idea about the bounty his teammates have on his virginity–she’s the total package for a vacation fling.

Genre: Romance – Sports, Virgin
Stand-Alone: Yes
Part of a Series: No
POV: Anders and Dahlia
Steam Level: Steaming
4/5

Full Contact was another fun book in this anthology.  Anders is the virgin on the team and the guys have posted a bounty for whoever he loses his virginity to.  Dahlia has been hurt by jerks in the past and has no idea who Anders is.  This story has some giggly moments and some extremely hot ones as well.  The only reason why I’m giving this four stars rather than five is because the editing got sloppy at the end.  The beginning was fine but the amount of typos in the part of the book was distracting and detracted from the story.

Book 15: COURAGE, Lena Hart – Newly appointed head coach Mason Courage is in for the fight of his life. What should have been the biggest night of his career turns into the worst moment in his life when his wife Jules serves him with divorce papers. But this former bad boy isn’t about to let anyone–or anything–breakup his family. For his wife, his children, his players…Mason is prepared to fight for them all.

Genre: Romance – Sports, Second-Chance
Stand-Alone: Yes
Part of a Series: I don’t think so but feels like it should be 🙂
POV: Mason and Jules
Steam-Level: Warm
5/5

I loved this one!  It was unique, emotional, and raw.  Coach Mason Courage finds out that his wife is filing for divorce.  Mason refuses to let this happen and vows to fight for his wife and their marriage.  Throughout Mason and Jules are either fighting for or with each other.  Their relationship takes one step forward and two steps back.  I love that this story was so raw and powerful.  It is full of emotional misunderstandings, hurt and anger yet love of and for your spouse and family.  The is definitely one of the more heart-felt and emotional stories and not a theme or subject that you see a lot of in romance books.

Book 16: RANSOM, USA Today Bestseller Nana Malone – Money, power, prestige…reject. Ransom Cox is –The Player. His whole life, hockey player, Ransom Cox, has watched the people he loves the most reject and leave him. He’s learned it’s better to be on his own. After the scandal of his wife walking out on him right before the championships, citing his bedroom “over” prowess as the reason, he can’t seem to escape the spotlight. The last thing he wants is to be stranded in a cabin with the one girl he’s always wanted. The one girl who could destroy him.

Genre: Romance – Sports
Stand-alone: Yes
Part of a Series: Part of The Player Series
POV: Dual Ransom and Lexa
Steam-level – My kindle may have melted a little
5/5

This is the first book I’ve read of The Player Series and now I want to get caught up with the characters.  This book was fun and leaves you wanting more. While quite steamy at times this book tackles love, heartbreak, rejection, deception, and getting out of your comfort zone and taking risks on love.  The love that Ransom had for his mom was quite apparent and it made him sweeter rather than a mama’s boy.  This was a quick read that kept me on the edge of my seat throughout.

Book 17: CAGED, USA Today Bestseller Virginia Nelson -The Ragin’ Cajuns right winger, Oliver Tremblay, learned that nothing good can stay when he lost his parents on 9/11. Maisie plans to melt the ice king’s heart and prove she’s just the girl to go skate to skate with him, whether he likes it or not.

Genre: Romance – Sports, Second-Chance, Best Friend’s Sister
Stand-Alone: Yes
Part of a Series: No
POV: Maisie and Ollie
Steam-Level: Warm
4/5

I wanted to love this book but didn’t really.  The writing was great and the story compelling.  The emotions were real and raw and I like how the story was told by alternating in time.  There was just something (and I don’t even know what or why) that just didn’t click for me.  Virginia Nelson is a great writer and I definitely want to check out more of her books, just not this one so much.

Book 18: THE WARM UP, Xio Axelrod – Subzero. That’s what folks around the league call Constantine Zimin, hockey’s best defenseman. He’s unflappable. Stoic, even. No cracks in all that ice, not until he meets Suji Meriwether. The pediatric nurse has no time for bad-boy jocks who want to use her patients as props. But as soon as they meet, temperatures rise and their defenses fall.

Genre: Romance – Sports
Stand-alone: Yes
Part of a Series: No
POV: Suji and Zim
Steam Level: warm
5/5

The Warm Up is a great conclusion to the stories in this anthology (I enjoyed the cameo from an earlier story).  Zim is a private person which is hard since he just won The Cup. Soji is dedicated to her job and has been hurt before by love.  The sparks and build up in Suji and Zim’s relationship is the perfect mix of sweet and sexy.  The story was heartfelt and humorous.  The kids in the hospital ward stole the show and while emotional, not a tear-jerker.  Perfect!
