Clutch: A Novel is the laugh-out-loud chick lit romance chronicling the dating misadventures of Caroline Johnson, a single purse designer who compares her unsuccessful romantic relationships to styles of handbags – the “Hobo” starving artist, the “Diaper Bag” single dad, the “Briefcase” intense businessman, etc.
With her best friend, bar owner Mike, by her side, the overly-accommodating Caroline drinks a lot of chardonnay, puts her heart on the line, endures her share of unworthy suitors, and finds the courage to discover someone onto whom she wants to hold: the “Clutch”.
Author: Lisa Becker
Narrator: Suzanne Barbetta
Genre: Romance – Comedy
Part of a Series: I don’t think so
POV: Caroline, mostly but with an omnipotent narrator that delves into others’ thoughts
Steam Level: Toasty at times
Overall, Clutch was a fun listen. I liked that comical dating situations that Caroline got in to. And the I liked the author’s playful game of not judging others by their appearance. I loved that Caroline looked like a dumb blonde but was in actuality a smart business woman. However, Caroline’s business smarts do not carry into her relationship smarts – and that got annoying. I felt like 80% of this book went nowhere and should have been titled Caroline Johnson’s Misadventures in Dating. It’s cute but I got a little bored. I did get a few laugh out loud moments though.
I received this audiobook for free. This is my honest and voluntary review.
